Saint of the Week: Elizabeth Ann Seton

This week, we celebrate the life and work of a cradle Episcopalian who converted to Catholicism and eventually became canonized as the United States' first saint: Elizabeth Ann Seton. St. Elizabeth was a pioneer in education and the founder of the SIsters of Charity. She is honored not only in the Episcopal Church but also by most of the global Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church. Seton Hall University is so named in her honor.

Indeed, we are told, he so influenced the spread of Christianity there that Thomas is the most common name among males in today's vibrant, still expanding Indian Christian community.

Juan de Yepes y Álvarez (San Juan de la Cruz, St. John of the Cross) was a 16th-century Spanish priest, mystic, Carmelite friar, and poet. Like his contemporary and sponsor, Theresa of Ávila, he was a major figure of the Spanish Counter-Reformation. Among his many contributions, his writings gave us the English phrase "dark night of the soul."
Saint of the Week: Ambrose of Milan

Ambrose of Milan was a Doctor of the Church who won renown as a defender of orthodoxy against Arianism and a skillful church statesman. He was also a skillful hymnodist, introducing antiphonal chanting to enrich the liturgy. Dubbed the "honey-tongued priest," his preaching was a major factor in St. Augustine's decision to become a Christian.

Saint of the Week: Hugh of Lincoln

Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln, served as a diplomat in sensitive political negotiations, and protected Jews within his diocese from persecution. Steadfastly independent of secular influence, he was not afraid to rebuke either of the kings he served for treating their subjects unjustly. Hugh also refused to raise funds for King Richard's foreign wars. Even so, King Richard the Lionheart once said of him, "If all bishops were like my lord of Lincoln, not a prince among us could lift his head against them."
