St. Elizabeth was a pioneer in education and the founder of the SIsters of Charity. She is honored not only in the Episcopal Church but also by most of the global Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church. Seton Hall University is so named in her honor. |

Like his contemporary and sponsor, Theresa of Ávila, he was a major figure of the Spanish Counter-Reformation. Among his many contributions, his writings gave us the English phrase "dark night of the soul." |

He was also a skillful hymnodist, introducing antiphonal chanting to enrich the liturgy. Dubbed the "honey-tongued priest," his preaching was a major factor in St. Augustine's decision to become a Christian. |
