This week, we celebrate the life and work of a cradle Episcopalian who converted to Catholicism and eventually became canonized as the United States' first saint: Elizabeth Ann Seton. St. Elizabeth was a pioneer in education and the founder of the SIsters of Charity. She is honored not only in the Episcopal Church but also by most of the global Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church. Seton Hall University is so named in her honor.

Juan de Yepes y Álvarez (San Juan de la Cruz, St. John of the Cross) was a 16th-century Spanish priest, mystic, Carmelite friar, and poet. Like his contemporary and sponsor, Theresa of Ávila, he was a major figure of the Spanish Counter-Reformation. Among his many contributions, his writings gave us the English phrase "dark night of the soul."
Saint of the Week: Ambrose of Milan

Ambrose of Milan was a Doctor of the Church who won renown as a defender of orthodoxy against Arianism and a skillful church statesman. He was also a skillful hymnodist, introducing antiphonal chanting to enrich the liturgy. Dubbed the "honey-tongued priest," his preaching was a major factor in St. Augustine's decision to become a Christian.
